    FOREST SHOMER began saving seeds in 1969, and has been a full-time independent professional seedman since 1973. He founded and directed the nonprofit Abundant Life Seed Foundation, producing and distributing up to 600 types of seeds of open-pollinated vegetables, herbs and flowers, along with Northwest native species. Since 1992, he has owned and operated Inside Passage Seeds, listing 200 seeds of NW native tree, shrub, wildflower and grass species of the coastal Northwest from SE Alaska to northern California. Beginning in 1974, he has regularly given workshops on seed-saving and related issues of genetic diversity, more than 200 presentations in all. He gave the keynote address for the 2012 Northwest Permaculture Convergence at Fort Flagler, as well as for the Regenerations Seed and Plant Exchange (Kilauea, Kauai). More recently he has participated in and facilitated programs for the Hawaii Public Seed Initiative.

    INSIDE PASSAGE is a specialty seed service featuring the native and naturalized flora of the coastal Cascadian Bioregion. The Inside Passage is the name given to protected interior-coastal waterways between Washington's Puget Sound and Alaska's Icy Strait (Glacier Bay). The purpose of INSIDE PASSAGE is to provide a generous selection of seed-bearing species that are found along the Inside Passage and its tributaries, together with literature, skills and services that foster appreciation for the wise use of those species.

    Jeanmarie Morelli has enjoyed a 35-year career in ecological horticulture and sustainable agriculture. This background includes running Rainshadow Gardens in PT for 20 years, writing a gardening column in the Port Townsend Leader for seven years, and earning a Permaculture Design Certificate from Oregon State University in winter of 2015.Other permaculture experience includes a month-long workshop in Oaxaca in 1993 with Ianto Evans, and assisting in a wildcrafting workshop with Michael Pilarski and Penny Livingston in 1996. Jeanmarie also taught organic gardening at UCSC Farm and Garden for 4 years in the mid-1980’s and had a market garden in Missouri. In addition, Jeanmarie has taught workshops and courses on landscape design, ethnobotany, garden design for bird habitat, fruit tree pruning, herb cultivation, seed saving, insect identification and pest management.

  • Michael Pilarski is a farmer, educator and author who has devoted his life to studying and teaching how people can live sustainably on this Earth. He has extensive experience in organic farming, seed collecting, wildcrafting medicinal herbs, plant propagation, horticulture, teaching, and international networking. Michael has personally worked with over 1,000 species of plants. He founded Friends of the Trees Society in 1978 and has authored many books on forestry, agriculture, agroforestry and ethnobotany. Michael has been involved in the permaculture movement since 1981 as a writer, teacher and networker. He has taught over 20 full Permaculture Design Courses in the USA and abroad.
